Single or double hung window. 2 panes of glass, one on top of the other. One or both panes may slide up and down.Total Windows:

Casement window, also called a crank-out. One pane of glass, opens from either the left or right by turning a crank handle.Total Windows:

Patio doors. 2 large panes of glass. Most patio doors slide open; some swing open like traditional doors.Total Windows:

French panes, also called cut-ups. In the example on the left, there are 8 panes of glass, divided by permanent frames. So, if you were counting this window, you would say "8 of type 9".Total Windows:

Picture window. One pane of glass, fairly large, cannot be opened. No panes on either side. Typically found in living rooms and master bedrooms.Total Windows:

Side Lite. One pane of glass. Tall, narrow, and usually on both sides of the front door.Total Windows:
